Salmonfly Fishing Report

Missoula on the Fly

We are on the verge of some really good fishing right now around Missoula.  Some Salmonflies are just beginning to make an appearance in the West Fork and on Rock Creek.  I fished the upper Bitterroot yesterday, the river is big but fishable and is running clear.  We forced a dry fly for most of the afternoon, the dry fly fishing was a bit spotty but we were able to find some fish willing to come up to the surface when we could find the right combination of softer choppy water.  Over the next few weeks we should have good stonefly fishing as the Salmonflies and golden stones will start to show up in full force.   If the current conditions continue we have a chance at hitting the green drake hatch with clear and fishable water.  In many years we miss out on this hatch as the bugs come off in higher muddy water.  This hatch can produce some insane dry fly fishing if the stars and river conditions align.  Heading up the Blackfoot now and will write another report soon……
