Fly Fishing the Blackfoot

We are slowly starting the transition into fall fishing mode on all Missoula area rivers.  Water temps are beginning to drop as the nights get longer and cooler. We have been fishing both the Bitterroot and Clark Fork the last few days.  On the Bitterroot you can expect to see a lot of fish rising to Tricos in the mornings.  The afternoon hopper fishing has produced a few nice fish lately to the dedicated angler.  On the Clark Fork we have seen less Tricos but the fish seem more willing to eat big dry flies such as Grasshopper and Golden Stonefly patterns.  The Blackfoot River is currently closed to fishing.  This is due to the lower than average water conditions.  Keep an eye on Montana FWP’s closure status page here.  Some nice fish from the passed week……
