Floating through the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Confluence
For the first time ever we launched a boat at Turah and floated down the new river channel and through the confluence of the Blackfoot and the Clark Fork Rivers. This stretch of river has been closed for years while Milltown Dam was removed and the historic river channel was restored. It’s a scenic float close to town with lots of wildlife. The fishing was really good too. Prolific hatches of March Browns, Caddis, and Skwalas kept the fish looking up and willing to eat a dry fly.
There is a few tight spots and a nasty log jam in the float to deal with. If you plan on floating this stretch be careful! There is a great article written by fishing guide Billy Pfeifer that describes the route he took through some of the braided channels. Check out the article and his blog here.
Missoula River Conditions
The cooler winter like temps lately have dropped the flows in all the Missoula area rivers since last weeks spike. The fishing has been good area wide with lots of bugs hatching. We have more hot weather in the forecast coming up this weekend and early next week. This will surely get us into run off. If you are planning on getting out and doing some fishing soon, you have about two to three days before options get limited.
