Well, runoff is here. There are a few areas that you can find clean water around Missoula but options are limited.
Great fishing is out there to be had if you don’t mind driving. The Missouri River is a great option in May as many rainbows are returning from their spawning grounds right at about the same time the caddis flies start hatching. There are some March Browns around these days and the first of the caddis are starting to show up. Some big browns are being caught over there right now and the rainbows are entering post spawn feeding mode. Fishing nymphs/droppers in the morning and keeping an eye out for the window of March Brown dry-fly activity in the afternoon has been the key to success.
